David W Peake

David Wainwright Peake was born on October 26, 1924, in New York to Betty Robinson, age 33, and William Woodhouse Peake, age 46. He had two brothers Frederick and Cameron and one sister Allison. In Rye his family lived on 138 Grandview Ave and were members of Christ's Church. David attended Kent School and was a Yale University alumnus wher he was a member of the Fence Club.

David enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He served as a corporal in the Pacific with the 2nd Division and the 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division and survived the Battle of Iwo Jima.

The 5th Division saw its first combat action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 where it sustained the highest number of casualties of the three Marine divisions of the V Amphibious Corps (invasion force).

David's regiment the 27th Marines, during the course of the battle suffered 566 killed, 1,706 wounded, and had 4 Marines receive the Medal of Honor. The 5th Division was to be part of the planned invasion of the Japan homeland before Japan surrendered.

David Peake on Iwo Jima
Mr. and Mrs. William Wr . Peake of Grandview Avenue, received this week a letter from Iwo Jimn written by their son, Corporal David W, Peake of the Fifth Marine Division informing them that he is safe and sound after the battle on that island.

David married Ann Doak Journey in 1948 when he was 24 years old and they had four children.

He died on February 20, 2000, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 75, and was buried there.
